Musicians have either performed live for loot, or have had patrons. Historically (I'm talking generation scale) musicians have not been megastars. Or, you can explore other ways of generating income that don't rely on the sale of something which the market has decided isn't valuable. If you're going to place a gate on your music where only people who gave you some money may listen to it, well, I guess you can do that. So you haven't lost anything if they pirate it (which is especially true in the post-CD era). I recall reading an interview with Trent Reznor where he was saying, someone who pirates your music was never going to buy it.
